100 Groups In A War Against India...

Mumbai’s night of terror underscores a phenomenon concealed by the Indian government and intelligence agencies and deliberately ignored by a biased Anglo-American media for a long time: The rise of a virulent form of Hindu terrorism that begets violence from other minorities. Here is a list of almost one hundred groups that are fighting the Indian government. All of them thrive in India. The context for what has happened in Mumbai is stunning only for those unaware how a cocktail mix of wrong policies, official patronage to extremism, and separatist movements have come together to destabilize India.

The night of Nov. 26, 2008, will go down in history as the day when India’s homegrown terrorism reared its head after years of silent mushroom growth.

This terrorism in Mumbai is not surprising, unlike the reactions in most of the western media. India’s terrorist underground has been flourishing for many years. While the U.S. media was busy last year likening Pakistan to Iraq in a politically motivated campaign aligned with U.S. military objectives, experts were ranking India only second to Iraq in the number of people who died as a result of terrorist attacks between 2004 and 2007, according to one survey by an American think tank.

The Indian government has been artfully concealing a worrying development for at least sixteen years under an organized hype centered on economic growth and military power projection with a focus on China and Pakistan.
Indian terrorism is a confusing mix. Journalists and observers outside the region often miss the simmering tensions beneath the surface that occasionally burst into the open, surprising many and raising questions like how could there be so much violence in what is supposed to be a secular democracy and a rising economy where such things should not happen.

In India, there is a cocktail mix of wrong policies, official patronage to extremism, and separatist movements, all coming together to destabilize India. At least 600 Christians, churches, nuns and priests were targeted by Hindu mobs in eastern India in August this year. Almost the entire Muslim population of Kashmir is up in arms against the excesses, arrests, murders and rapes by the Indian army. For years there has been a media trial of Indian Muslims for real and imaginary involvement in violence. News such as the arrest this month of two serving Indian army officers involved in crimes that were attributed to Indian Muslims has served to increase disgruntlement among minorities. In 2002, close to 2,500 Indian Muslim men, women and children were burned alive in the first religious genocide of 21st century. In 1984, Sikhs were hauled off buses in New Delhi and beaten or burned to death following the assassination of Indian prime minister Indra Gandhi at the hands of Sikh bodyguards. And finally, between 12 to 14 separatist insurgencies currently rage across India’s north and northeast.

All of this makes for a dangerous combination that simmers quietly under the surface. The Indian media’s self-imposed ban on discussing these problems helps keep the lid on them. But when the pressure becomes unbearable, things occasionally burst into the open in the shape of terrorist acts. This only surprises those who do no know how India has been gradually relapsing into religious extremism in the period between 1990 and 2008. This history is important in order to understand why the Indian claims of Pakistani complicity in the attacks have often sought to simplify a complex situation.

Hindu militant groups have mushroomed in the past few years. This month, the arrest of two serving Indian army officers has confirmed speculation that Hindu terrorist groups have infiltrated Indian military and political establishments.
1992 was the definite year that saw Hindu fundamentalism express itself politically. Hundreds of religious terrorists descended on a north Indian city with tools in hand. They climbed on top of a majestic, 500-year-old mosque built by the same Muslim rulers who built the famous Taj Mahal. Imbibed with religious hatred, the Hindu mobs razed the building to the ground. Indian government authorities did nothing to stop it.

This Indian betrayal of a carefully crafted secular image would prove fatal later. In 1999, a Hindu mob surrounded the car of Graham Staines, an Australian priest, and his underage boy and girl and burned them alive.
Australia maintained an unusual quiet till this day about this major act of terrorism. The bias is easily detectable when compared to Australia’s reaction and statements to ‘Muslim terrorism’, especially in Indonesia and later in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

In this sense, countries like United States, Britain and Australia are partially responsible for letting the growth of India terrorism – with its mix of Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Christian and ethnic insurgencies – go unnoticed for so many years. These western countries have done this in order not to disturb the Anglo-Saxon project of grooming India as a bulwark against China and Russia and other regional powers.

Following is a list of various indigenous separatist, militant and terrorist organizations operating in India against the Indian federal government. This list has been compiled using information available in the public domain, news reports and specialized publications. During any given incident in India, a combination of some or all of these organizations is a suspect, including in the Mumbai blasts and in any other militant activity. Blaming Kashmiris or Pakistanis for Indian internal problems would be a factual misrepresentation that must be countered with full force by Pakistan.

It should also be noted that the Indian establishment is cracking down on Tamil separatists due to violence in Sri Lanka as Tamils are regrouping in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nado. Tamils have to their credit the last significant political assassination in India, the blowing up of former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1984. They continue to be the most ruthless terror outfit in India. Mumbai blasts carry the fingerprints of many terror groups operating inside India, each with a long list of grievances against the Indian government and enough motivation to carry out such terrorist acts.

Not all groups in this list are necessarily terrorist organizations. But all of them are active against the Indian government.

Why Hindu Extremists Invaded Taj Mahal? A group of 10 Hindutva activists-cum-militants belonging to Shiv Sena, a core fundamentalist political outfit, sneaked into the Taj Mahal at Agra on July 24 and performed prayers (puja) within the precincts on Thursday. They were taken into custody and later released without any hurdles. This is a routine matter for Indian governments when Hindus perform illegal activities. Had Muslims enter the temples and remove the idols and clean up the structure to be able to offer prayers to God, the matter would be different. Hindu outfits, who consider themselves above law and have every right to do anything they please with Muslims and their mosques, have been on a rampage for political reasons with concocted stories against Islam.

World media is not giving it projection, Indians are hiding it and Pakistani media is too busy focusing on political turmoil within. The fact is that the Indian federation has been shaken to the core over the developments in Indian held Kashmir in the last few weeks.

TERRORISM preoccupies Indian minds as pre-planned, organised violence is perpetrated on crowds of shoppers, week after week.

Saturdays are no longer the relaxed weekend for shopping, sightseeing or visiting. The festival season is on, with Aidilfitri gone and Puja coming. Deepavali is but two weeks away. But these have become occasions for fearsome foreboding. Where and when will the next attack come?

India is bleeding, even as it surges ahead on the economic front, with 45 nations enabling it to gain access to nuclear energy and a range of technologies. This is a pity.

Thirty-eight bomb blasts have ripped through four cities since May 13, killing 158. Many more have been maimed. Last year's score, or that of the previous year's, was lower, but no less vicious.India has faced terrorism for a long time, attributing it to its volatile neighbourhood. But what it is facing in recent years is indigenous militancy, which is more dreadful, more painful.Part of the reason is the post-9/11 backlash that much of the world is facing. But events at home (to call them "mistakes" may be appropriate but certainly not sufficient) by the Hindutva forces have contributed to it in a big way.

Some political parties are taking dubious advantage, so cynical have they become as elections come closer. Terrorism is to be vote-cashed. To counter it, some other parties and individuals take up the cause of the minorities, the entire communities, in a manner that can only render them disservice and alienate them further in the eyes of the majority.

Both these approaches scuttle the effort to fight terrorism. Terrorism is unlikely to vanish into thin air soon. India needs to make long-term plans with a response that is both political and security-minded.

Violence against minorities, especially Christians and Muslims, is becoming a fashion in India.. The brutality is increasing at an alarming rate while the government is turning deaf ears towards the cries. Even the International criticism against such brutality and aggression has made no difference is the ignorant attitude of the Indian government. Muslims and Christians are burnt alive. Their worship places are being demolished. The havoc is getting dreadful every minute.

Note: Yet the zeal with which west is dragging the nuclear deal is un-understandable.

The Indian diplomat G. Parathasarathy admitted supporting terrorism in Sri Lanka. He synically recorded his confession “We have learnt our lesson” for backing the terrorist and that “India paid its price for backing the LTTE”. India has not paid a price for the atrocities committed by the LTTE. It needs to pay the price and call the dogs of war off, but India is not doing that...

Amnesty International has charged India on four counts.
1) Increasing violence against marginalised communities and
2) Their Forced evictions in the name of development,
3) The trampling of human rights in the name of war on terrorism and protecting national security, reluctance to abolish death sentence - India had voted against a UN General Assembly resolution for a moratorium on the death penalty and
4) India’s refusal to allow UN Rapporteur on Torture and Enforced Disappearances to visit and investigate the cases. Jamia Millia Islamia Vice Chancellor Prof. Mushirul Hassan and a noted activist Sadia Dehelvi, who unveiled the report, lamented that a campaign for human rights and concern for marginalised sections were a least priority for the government and its powerful media.

Note: At the same time US is getting edgy to arm India with nuclear technology…

International human rights watchdog Amnesty International has said that despite a limited urban economic boom affecting a section of the population, India continues to lag behind on human rights, reporting gross abuses in Jammu and Kashmir, North-Eastern states (Seven Sisters) and the Gujarat Naxalite-affected states of Chattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand, revealing the true face of India. The seven states of the Northeast are not in control of the central government and are in open rebellion against New Delhi.

Note: While the US, in spite of everything, is showing keen interest and intense desire to arm India with nuclear technology…

The report says that despite economic progress, around 300 million people remained in poverty. It charged the government with ignoring existing constitutional provisions while forcing tribals and marginalised sections from their homes and allotting property to industrialists. In the Bihar state alone about 49.5 percent of rural Muslim families and 44.8 percent of the urban Muslim households fall below the poverty line… (That’s secularism I guess…?)

Twelve Indian states have “alarming” levels of hunger while the situation is “extremely alarming” in the state of Madhya Pradesh, says a new report. India has more people suffering hunger - a figure above 200 million. The report, released as part of the 2008 Global Hunger Index, ranks India at 66 out 88 countries.
“Despite years of robust economic growth, India scored worse than nearly 25 sub-Saharan African countries and all of South Asia, except Bangladesh,” the report says. The best performing state was Punjab, which has a ’serious’ hunger problem and does less well than developing countries such as Gabon, Vietnam and Honduras.
India is long known to have some of the highest rates of child malnutrition and mortality in under-fives in the world.

Note: Amazingly, the US is enthusiastically trying to arm India with nuclear technology…

India is bleeding… people are dying with hunger… poverty is moving on to extremes… states getting out of control of the central government… malnutrition getting worse… the Hindutva forces are contributing to terrorism… further, the terrorism is being vote-cashed… violence against marginalised communities is on the increase… bloodshed is tremendous…

With all this in picture the impatient expectancy shown by the west to arm India with Nuclear technology is something a sane mind cannot understand. This is probably the time when India needs to concentrate on the real issues prevailing inside the country rather than concentrating on such deals... India can never fulfill its dream of becoming super power when majority of its population is dying with hunger.

Delhi should crack down swiftly on the violence against Christians...

For months, armed thugs in one state of eastern India have been burning churches, rampaging through villages and subjecting terrified Christians to forcible conversion to Hinduism. The violence has been instigated by nationalist Hindu groups that are targeting poor and weak Christian communities in a campaign aimed at halting conversions, driving out “alien” influences and reasserting the political supremacy of India's majority religion.

The violence is concentrated in Orissa, a poor state on the eastern seaboard where Christian missionaries have long been active. But in recent weeks the attacks have spread. Since August 24, according to the Roman Catholic Church in India, 300 Christian villages have been destroyed in Orissa, 4,400 houses burnt, 50,000 people made homeless and 59 Christians killed and 18,000 injured. Churches and schools have been destroyed and in one particularly brutal attack a nun was seized and raped while local police stood by without intervening. Churches have also been attacked in six other states, largely in the south, but even in Delhi Christians have been threatened.

The violence is directly linked to Hindu nationalist groups determined to assert their power in the run-up to India's next general election, which must be held within the next seven months. Extremists have been steadily gaining power, with the oldest, the Rashtriya Swaytamsevak Sangh, (RSS) playing a shadowy role in rallying Hindu nationalist support behind its main political vehicle, the BJP party, the main national opposition to the ruling Congress-led coalition. Allied groups such as the VHP or Bajrang Dal preach the same intolerant message, with the ultimate aim of overthrowing India's secular Constitution and restricting or eliminating the rights of the large Muslim minority and of Christians, who account for 2.5 per cent of the population.

Despite the denunciations of Manmohan Singh, the Prime Minister, who called the Orissa violence a “national shame”, the federal Government has proved unwilling or unable to intervene. The state government, controlled by the BJP and its allies, has made little effort to halt the attacks, and local police are far from impartial. But Delhi is reluctant to impose presidential rule. And though middle-class Indians look with distaste at the quasi-fascist rallies and demagogic incitments of the RSS and its offshoots, a ban on their activities would be unworkable: the “Hindutva” movement is now so strong throughout India that it could easily sidestep restrictions.

But reasons are not excuses. The attacks on the Christians are a national disgrace, the more despicable because many were once lower-caste Hindus who changed their faith to escape a life of servitude and humiliation. Unless this persecution is quickly halted, its scale could grow and spread. The 2002 massacre of 2,000 Muslims in Gujarat exposed the ever-present danger of communal violence when exploited by demagogues.

Dr Singh should need no prompting from the Vatican or concerned Christian groups in the West. An effective federal police force should be sent to Orissa and swiftly deployed. Instigators should be arrested and curfews imposed. And all India should resist this attempt to destroy the very basis of its polity and prosperity: its democracy and diversity. Without tolerance, both count for little.
